The Five Reiki Principles and How to Live Them Daily

Reiki is more than a hands-on practice. At its center are five simple principles that shape how a practitioner moves through the day. Mikao Usui, the founder of Reiki, gave these principles to his students as a guide for living, not just for healing. Here they are, and here is how to bring each one into an ordinary day.

Why does each Reiki principle begin with just for today?

Mikao Usui opened each of his five principles with just for today so the practice stays small and reachable. You are not promising a lifetime without anger or worry. You are choosing kindness, gratitude, and honest work for the day in front of you.

Where the principles come from

Mikao Usui developed the Reiki system in Japan in the early 1920s. He taught five principles, often called the Gokai, and asked students to hold them in mind each morning and evening. Each one begins with the same gentle phrase: "Just for today." That opening matters. It asks for nothing more than the day in front of you.

The five principles

The principles are usually written like this:

  1. Just for today, I will not be angry.
  2. Just for today, I will not worry.
  3. Just for today, I will be grateful.
  4. Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
  5. Just for today, I will be kind to every living thing.

How to live each one

Not angry. When frustration rises, pause and take one slow breath before you respond. You are not denying the feeling. You are choosing not to be ruled by it, just for today.

Not worried. Notice when your mind races ahead to what might happen. Gently bring your attention back to the task in your hands right now.

Grateful. Name one thing you are thankful for each morning. Small counts. A warm drink, a kind word, a quiet moment.

Honest work. Do the task in front of you with full attention and integrity, whether anyone is watching or not.

Kind to every living thing. Offer one small kindness a day, to another person, an animal, or yourself. Kindness to yourself counts most of all.

A simple daily practice

Read the five principles slowly each morning, and again before you sleep. Some practitioners place a hand over the heart while they do it. Over time the words settle in, and they begin to guide your choices without effort.
